How long have you been doing what you do?
First, let me give you a little background about me. I have been in practice for over 28 years as an Orthodontist. I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Dental School in 1984 and continued for another 2 years to obtain my Specialty Certification in Orthodontics.
From 1986 until 1993, besides starting my own practice, I was an associate in another practice, and a clinical instructor in the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Pennsylvania, where I was twice voted “Instructor of the Year” by the orthodontic residents. In 1992 I became a Board Certified in Orthodontics, which is achieved by less than 25 percent of all orthodontists in the United States.
In 2009, my husband and I were chosen as America’s Premier Experts in Orthodontics and Invisalign. Together we have been interviewed by USA Today, Newsweek, The Wall Street Journal, and FOX News 40 in Sacramento about our expertise in growing our Orthodontic practice to one of the top 1% in revenue in the United States.
In July 2009, I co-authored the book Big Ideas for Your Business, which quickly became a best-seller. In July 2010, the second book I co-authored with Brian Tracy, Power Principles for Success, became an Amazon National Best-Seller in less than one week!
Recently I published another book called, It’s All About Millimeters: How Small Changes Can Make A Big Impact In Your Business and Your Life, which helps both business owners and individuals achieve their goals using my “millimeter approach” that I outline in the book.
In an additional effort to share my knowledge and expertise, I offer keynote presentations for conferences, events, workshops, and seminars around the world. As a member of Align Technology’s Faculty I have spoken both Nationally and Internationally to doctors looking to achieve better results with their Invisalign™ cases.
Over the course of my career, I have started 6 practices from scratch, bought 4 pre-existing practices and sold 3 practices. The last 20 years, I have practiced with my husband and we currently have 2 children ages 16 and 18. I still practice full-time and yes my husband and I are in the office together seeing patients!
But how did I get the “bug” to coach other doctors?
It starts with dental school and the severe lack of business training that they give you. One hundred percent of the time you are learning about dentistry and how to solve patients’ dental health problems. Except for a 2 hour seminar given to us the last week of school, there was no course or instruction or training on how to run a dental practice.
I ended up attending the “School of Hard Knocks.” It is an expensive school and it takes more time then most schools because you get to make all the mistakes first before you figure out the correct way and most financially feasible way to solve a business problem, and those mistakes are often the most costly!
I hired well known dental consultants and paid a lot of money to work with them, hoping to get some guidance and help in managing and growing my practices. Unfortunately, at least 95% of the time, there was no return on investment. In fact, I often felt even more frustrated because I had spent time and money to learn and grow, but all I really obtained was more debt and no real direction.
Fortunately, I was able to learn quickly from my mistakes, analyze my situation, and build my own knowledge base by attending seminars, reading books and talking with other business owners and dentists who were running successful dental practices.
As a specialist, I often have lunch or dinner with my referring dental colleagues. Many times they share their frustrations at their consultants, their lack of business knowledge or just the pure frustration of running a practice and not having someone to help them with marketing and management.
I realized that I was often giving advice to these younger dentists who were in situations that I had experienced first hand in the past. At that point, I realized that I want to help and teach or coach these dentists because I could make a difference in their lives and their practices. After all, I had been there and I understood their pain, fear and anxiety, and most of all, I actually had the answers that would really help them.
Who are your typical clients?
My typical clients are dentists, although the information I teach and share will help any healthcare provider succeed and grow their practice. Dentists are typically practice owners and have families. They are trying to balance the demands of being a dentist, a practice owner, an employer, a spouse, mother, father, sister, aunt, uncle, brother, friend and at the same time have room for their hobbies or personal needs.
How are you different from other online marketing consultants and coaches?
I am different from other coaches in my industry because I am a DENTIST. Pure and simple… I have walked in your shoes and I understand what you go through. I could not be as compassionate a coach nor as effective as I am without my 28 years experience running my own practices, hiring and firing employees, planning marketing campaigns, managing finances, securing financing for practice growth and all the myriad of activities that a dentist does (besides the dentistry).
I believe my experience gives me credibility with my clients. I share with them the stupid things I have done as well as the smart things I have done, and I know they appreciate my honesty. I TRULY want to help them succeed and do it without hardship and pain. I am successfully Creating an Extraordinary Practice and Life ™ for myself, so I know it can be done with the right information, guidance and coaching.
What type of people and personalities do you work best with and what is expected of me?
I work best with those dentists who are willing to do the work. They need to be committed to making the changes necessary to get to their goals. They have persistence and are focused. They are committed to growing THEMSELVES and their teams.
I compare coaching to training for a marathon (which I have done). When I first started my training I was running about 3-4 miles 3 times a week and GRADUALLY increased my mileage over a 6 month period. I followed a plan written by someone who had run a marathon over 100 times. I knew that if I followed his plan step by step, I would be successful in my goal to run a marathon and go out shopping for Christmas gifts with my daughter later that afternoon.
I followed the plan even though there were days that I wanted stay home and not run. I trained in the summer for a marathon in December. So I had to get up early ( 6am) to start running before it got too hot. I tell my coaching clients that the results and the reward come from persistence, determination and focusing on your goals. That is how I was able to finish 26.2 miles and go to the mall later in the day and shop for 4 hours with my daughter!
The clients I work with are those who get this and are excited about the future and achieving their goals through hard work, not a magic bullet overnight. (They are not expected to train for marathon run however!!!)
What type of people or businesses will your program and strategies NOT work for?
The dentists who are looking for a quick fix, a “magic bullet”, a secret marketing strategy that will bring in 100 new patients in 30 days or less. Those type of clients will not have success with my program.
This program requires dedication to a long term perspective of their practice, their leadership skills and their personal lives. If a client does not understand that all three are key components in the success of their practice, then they will not be a good fit for my coaching programs.
What type of programs do you offer?
Right now I have 2 main programs that I am offering.
The Galante Group is a monthly membership group that includes audio interviews and training, transcripts, done-for-you marketing pieces and staff training tools each and every month. You can download the audios to your smart phone and listen to them in the car or at the gym, you can read the transcripts of the interviews and coaching calls, and hand the marketing piece to your office manager for immediate implementation. It is affordable and helps you grow to be a better leader and better marketer of your practice.
The second coaching area is Invisalign Clincheck™ coaching. I provide detailed analysis of your clinchecks via video and email. This type of coaching is great for the doctor interested in expanding their Invisalign patient base and growing their practice.
Besides these two groups, I have many self-study products that you can purchase under the products tabs. Products that will help you with Hiring, New Patient Aquistion, Time Management and Productivity and much more.
Can you share a little more about yourself with me?
Besides my professional activities, I have a fulfilling family life with my husband and two children. A big part of each week includes hanging out with them at home or at sporting events.
My family enjoys world travel and have been to Peru, Costa Rica, Spain, Mexico, Canada, Europe and the British and American Virgin Islands together.
I am an avid reader and enjoy running, swimming, cooking, theater arts, and entertaining. I am very proud to say that I achieved my longtime goal of completing a marathon before my 50th birthday.
